Jane Birkin’s Birkin

Those of you who are regulars to this blog know that the Hermes Birkin bag is a favourite of the Real Housewives and most well-heeled women in the know and, in case you’ve missed our other posts about this iconic Birkin bag, the first one is here, and it has been followed by many other Birkin posts…

The Birkin Bag, A Real Housewives Favourite

…our other posts include Taylor Armstrong’s fake Birkins, where to get a fake Birkin and numerous posts about who does Birkin well.

Here’s a little more history on the Birkin…

In 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. She had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment of her seat, but the contents fell to the deck, leaving her to scramble to replace the contents. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her,[2][3] based on an 1892 design. She used the bag for herself then later changed her mind because she was carrying too many things in it: “What’s the use of having a second one?” she laughs. “You only need one and that busts your arm; they’re bloody heavy. I’m going to have to have an operation for tendonitis in the shoulder.” [4] Nevertheless, the bag has since become an icon.

We would like to introduce you to Jane Birkin, as pictured yesterday, and a full 30 years after the original bag was created, carrying none other than her namesake, the Hermes Birkin bag.

Now you’re met the Jane Birkin of today and you’re a woman in the know.

Incidentally, here’s a picture of Jane Birkin back in 1969.  She was quite the character…

  1. Thank you for the mini history lesson. I always wondered what,
other than the price and exclusivity, was the fascination with this
imo, essentially homely bag. It looks horribly uncomfortable to carry.

Is there a reason I am missing that would have woman go on a 7
year waiting list to pay the price of an automobile for something
that is uncomfortable to carry and not all that attractive?

Economics 101? Supply and demand? Just because they can?
Snob appeal? Look at me-itis? Nani Nani Boo Boo??
    please enlighten me.

Having friends, (2) that carry these bags~ it freaking kills them that
they think many don’t “realize” what they are carrying,
If someone like Taylor doesn’t know the difference between a real
and an imitation, how is the average woman who receives one for
a “””gift””” supposed to know? Who knows?!

    • Most women of means don’t like to carry “logo” bags, primarily because it’s what “commoners” carry. The Birkin has been somewhat of a secret club carrying bag…only sophisticated, wealthy, cultured women in-the-know carried them. With the Chinese whipping out replicas of everything and it becoming more difficult to spot a real Birkin versus a fake, Hermes decided to make it more readily available and to do away with the waiting list. Their strategy worked for many years, which made the bag more coveted, but honestly the number of millionaires and billionaire is doubling every few days and they want the Birkin. The Chinese market alone will triple the sales of most luxury companies. In fact, in their new Congress there are 83 billionsaires. The wealth being built in that country is the likes of which we have never seen in this country, where billionaire status has been limited to the very few.

      • IMO that just proves my point.
A Birkin is the greatest “logo” brand ever. It may have once been the brand that few recognized, and few can buy it. Nevertheless, it has become the “brand”
        that all want.
I remember you telling us that they had eliminated the waiting list.
that means they are supplying more for the demand(for the reason you
stated, so many more with large amounts of money) They are
trying to eliminate the fakes? meh, once the fakes start, how do
        you stop them?
Even if Taylor knew hers were fake, did her friends? And if they
thought they were real, does it matter if they weren’t? (if she had never
        been caught—)

I guess my point is that the women of means need to find a less common
bag, as the commoners have caught on.

I still think the bag is as hard on the eye as it is on the shoulder. JMHO
        But I am so nuevo?

      • Ah hahaha. So funny, but in many ways you’re right. Hermes is going to try to attack the fake market by removing the scarcity. Tory Burch recently went after 263 websites that were hawking fake TB product. The judge awarded her the domain names, thereby giving her complete control of the online market and setting a precedent that other designer labels would do well to copy.

Most people will buy fakes if they can, though they won’t admit it. Celebs won’t do it because they’re under such scrutiny and they can comfortably aford to buy the real thing. With respect to Taylor, it’s doubtful anyone knew they were fakes because people don’t actually get that close to carefully examine a piece.

The commoners have caught on and the Birkin is an everyday item. Now what will they do? I like the Birkin because it can handle a lot of abuse and you really can’t kill them.

      • ugh.
        always awaiting moderation.
        It sucks being a commoner.

      • I think it sucks to be a moderator.

      • Actually, I should have used the “Kathy” phrase…”civilians”.

  2. Incidentally, Taylor and Russell were notorious for trying to fake it till they made it, so we won’t pretend like we believe her when she says she didn’t know the bags were fake…of course she knew. She was in on the fame game, too.

What do you think?
